The nation's first Tree Summit, hosted by Casey Trees convened on March 25, 2010, brought together a multi-disciplinary group of researchers and professionals from federal, regional and local governments, and other communities involved in setting and implementing tree canopy goals, as well as stakeholders from grassroots and community groups.
The Tree Summit focused on a shared goal - achieving the District's ambitious but attainable 40 percent by 2035 Urban Tree Canopy Goal set by Mayor Adrian Fenty in April 2009. Over the course of the day, participants exchanged ideas, challenged complacency, learned about emerging trends and available resources and perhaps most importantly, forged new and strengthened existing partnerships.
It is important to continue the momentum and energy created during the Tree Summit. Become an advocate for re-treeing DC by encouraging the City to develop a unifying “Urban Forest Agenda” that will help guide all tree planting and care efforts – public and private. Call your Councilmember and ask them to support the District Department of the Environment (DDOE) at (202) 535-2600 as they work to forge this plan. In addition, call the DDOE’s Watershed Protection Division at (202) 535-2240 to support them in their work to piece together this plan.
