Casey Trees Programs

Casey Trees Education Initiatives

Casey Trees offers programs for DC schools and their students. These programs maximize on the educational benefits trees can play in our school landscape. Our programs integrate the best practices of hands-on learning, environmental education, and GIS technology in the classroom to create relevant, real world experiences. Our Green Tech programs are aligned with DCPS science standards.

GreenTech Education Program

The Casey Trees GreenTech Education Program works with teachers and students in DC high schools to understand the relationship between changes in tree canopy cover and watershed health. Hands-on activities include conducting an inventory of the trees in their schoolyard (or other local site), entering this data into a Geographic Information System (GIS), and running an ecosystem analysis to evaluate the ecological and economic benefits of the trees on their site. Learning from this analysis, the students then design and implement a planting plan to increase the benefits of trees on their site. The project is supported by a year-long professional development program for teachers and consists of seven basic steps which can be completed over the course of a semester, a full academic year, or as a discrete six to eight-week unit, depending on what best fits each class.
