High School Summer Crew

About

Watering Water By-Cycle Tree Walk Tree Nursery

Each summer Casey Trees invites high school students to serve on the Casey Trees Summer Crew. Any high school student age 16 and older may apply to join us for a summer of outdoor tree care.  Responsibilities include:

  • Watering
  • Weeding
  • Mulching
  • Tracking tree condition and mortality

Summer Crew participants become ambassadors for the District’s trees, educating residents and business owners about the many benefits of trees and tree care.

Career Development

Tree Climbing

The eight-week program also includes several career development field trips. In addition to their tree care responsibilities, past Summer Crews have:

  • Climbed 100 foot trees with Davey Tree Expert Company at the U.S. National Arboretum
  • Learned how to grow food in the middle of the city at the Common Good City Farm
  • Planted elm trees on Dangerfield Island
  • Designed a treescape plan for the first green affordable housing complex in the District
  • Hiked the Oxon Run Watershed
  • Built a rain garden with the Anacostia Watershed Society

  • Eight-week session from June 28 - August 20, 2010
  • Thirty-five hours per week, Monday through Friday
  • Pay is $9.00 an hour.
